Penny for your thoughts book11/18/2023 I never did ask, but I do know it’s a large and undisclosed sum of money. What’s the prize? Halinka called down the bus from her seat in the back. All part of the mystery! Miss Bunsen replied, sounding a little nervous now herself. ![]() Who was the letter from, Miss Bunsen? Penelope, the head girl, asked. The Bunseners aboard the bus looked at one another dubiously. There was a letter that was only sent out to the most prestigious of schools-our glorious school included, of course-inviting us to take part in a mystery maze adventure. Oh, I’m going off track, Miss Bunsen muttered, causing a brief panic before everyone realized she was not talking about the country road they were traveling along. One of the girls in the front seat cleared her throat in an exaggerated fashion. They had hidden it in one of their nests and… I do apologize for the last-minute school trip! There was no time to call an assembly, you see, as I only just found the letter. Whoops! Sorry, girls, said Miss Bunsen as she tapped the microphone strapped to her head with one hand while trying to steer the bus with the other. Pearl and Millie were having trouble controlling their expressions of disgust when they all heard a crackle and a loud whistling sound. There’s always something lying around that I can improvise with, Halinka said as she pulled a piece of gum from the back of the seat in front of them and popped it into her mouth. Millie tightened the rope that fastened her old-fashioned wooden skis to her bag and shoved it back up into the overhead compartment, clonking Halinka on the head for the second time. Okay, maybe the skis are a little unnecessary, but it’s better to be sure. You’ve got enough stuff in that rucksack to prepare the whole school to traverse the Himalayas! I know I’m overprepared, Millie said, but you never know what you’re going to need, or when you’re going to need it. ![]() Good thing you’ve got a thick head of hair to protect you, said Pearl, smiling as she and Millie helped Halinka pull a wrench out of her curls.Ĭan you put this monstrosity somewhere more secure? Halinka grumbled, passing Millie her heavy bag. Ouch! Halinka shrieked as the double-decker school bus bumped over a pothole, causing Millie’s enormous tool kit to fall from the luggage compartment above and land directly on her head.
